Global Tech Outages: CrowdStrike outage are the new normal

Despite many being taken aback by the rarity of last week’s tech outage caused by faulty CrowdStrike programme update, it laid bare fragility of our online networks. However, the incident was a wake-up call for cyber security professionals as regards the unending weaknesses in interconnected systems.

Incident Details

Event Description: This resulted from an erroneous update made by CrowdStrike and affected computers across continents leading to air travel disruption as well as disarray in hospitals and banks among others. Footage showed various gadgets displaying “blue screen of death” which depicted how severe things had gone.

Immediate Impact: Consequently, some important services were temporarily switched off during this incident causing pandemonium with considerable operational interruptions. In order to remove the defective update, rectification process required manual input and direct access to the compromised computer systems.

Recurrent Risks: But according to Jeffrey Dodson, a prominent cyber security consultant, such incidents are inevitable even with tight security measures. He compared the situation to a recurring risk that necessitates constant watchfulness and readiness.
